Tanmia, the National Human Resource Development and Employment Authority, recently urged UAE Nationals to take up entrepreneurial roles in the country’s small and medium enterprise (SME) segment, during the first SME forum for UAE Nationals that was held today (Tuesday, November 24, 2009) at the Umm Al Quwain Chamber of Commerce and Industry premises.
 
The special forum, held in coordination with Saud Al Mualla Establishment for Youth Projects, covered topics such as opportunities in the SME sector; developing entrepreneurial skills; evaluation of business ideas; how to set up small businesses; and challenges faced by the SME sector.      
 
“The immense potential and vast opportunities in the UAE’s small and medium enterprise segment can be gauged from the fact that the SME segment accounts for a significant percentage of the country’s GDP. Moreover, around 85 to 95 per cent of all businesses in the UAE are made up of SMEs,” said Noora Al Bedur, Manager of Employment and skills development centre, Tanmia.
 
“The strong government support and the strategic advantages that the UAE offers businesses have contributed to the robustness and resiliency of the country’s economy, which creates an ideal setting for both small and large enterprises to flourish. We are confident that an increasing number of young UAE Nationals will make the most of the opportunities they have to exhibit their entrepreneurial skills,” added Al Bedur.
   
The first SME forum in Umm Al Quwain was aimed at helping young UAE Nationals come up with and analyse business ideas, familiarising them with the entire process of setting up a business enterprise, and reinforcing the importance of preparing feasibility studies.
